66% Indians Prefer Culture Over Pay in Job Shifts

Great Place To Work India’s latest Voice of India study reveals shifting job-switching trends among Indian employees heading into 2026. The nationwide survey highlights workplace culture as a decisive factor in retention and mobility decisions. Notably, 66% of those considering a job change would accept lower pay for better conditions and flexibility.

Key Survey Findings on Job Mobility

In typical workplaces, 62% of employees actively seek new roles, with 70% of them planning to exit within the next year. Six in 10 employees without positive experiences intend to leave, dropping to half in certified great workplaces. Workplace culture tops the list for 87% evaluating new employers.

Satisfaction gaps persist for those planning to depart. They report 20-27% lower levels in fair pay, work-life balance, recognition, and management communication compared to stayers. Confidence in leadership cuts intent to leave by 16%, while innovation opportunities reduce it by 12%.

Sector and demographic trends show sharp mobility. Healthcare, biotech, and pharma lead with 81% expecting moves in 12 months. Generation Z follows at 76%, millennials at 68%, and frontline managers at 73%. Women in typical firms show 21% higher departure intent than in certified organizations.

Retention Drivers and Early Attrition

Early turnover plagues non-certified workplaces, especially in the first two years. Balbir Singh, CEO of Great Place To Work India, emphasized culture’s role in resilience. He noted investments in leadership and employee experience directly counter job-switching pressures.

The study underscores culture’s leverage over compensation in talent wars. Firms prioritizing trust, inclusion, and engagement build competitive edges. As India’s workforce grows discerning, certified workplaces demonstrate lower attrition across demographics.

This data equips CXOs to recalibrate strategies amid rising expectations. Hybrid models, fair recognition, and leadership visibility emerge as cost-effective retention tools.
