TRAI Chief: AI Powers Telecom’s 6G Era

Artificial intelligence has evolved from an optional enhancement to the foundational backbone of telecommunications infrastructure in India, according to Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Speaking at the 33rd Convergence India & 11th Smart Future Cities Expo, Lahoti detailed AI’s expanding role across self-optimising networks, predictive maintenance, intelligent spectrum management, enhanced cybersecurity, energy efficiency improvements, and elevated customer experiences.

India’s Digital Scale Demands AI-Native Infrastructure

India concluded 2025 with over 1 billion data subscribers, including 400 million 5G users generating more than 10 million terabytes of the nation’s 25 million total wireless data consumption. “India undergoes one of the world’s fastest digital transformations, with telecom and digital technologies now serving as core infrastructure for economic growth, governance, and social inclusion,” Lahoti emphasised.

Beyond Reactive Systems: AI Enables Proactive Intelligence

Lahoti highlighted telecom service providers’ effective deployment of AI for fraud and spam detection under TRAI’s regulatory framework. “AI is no longer peripheral to telecom—it has become integral to how networks are designed, managed, and experienced,” he stated. Traditional reactive network management proves inadequate against this scale; AI delivers dynamic optimisation across spectrum allocation, traffic engineering, and anomaly detection.

6G Horizon: AI-Native Network Design

As India accelerates 6G preparations, Lahoti envisions AI-native architectures enabling ultra-reliable, low-latency services with personalised delivery. Current 5G momentum—400 million users contributing 40% of data traffic—sets the stage for next-generation networks where AI handles complexity at machine speeds, from predictive capacity planning to real-time threat mitigation.

Strategic Implications for Telecom Evolution

TRAI’s endorsement signals regulatory support for AI-driven transformation, aligning with national priorities for digital sovereignty and infrastructure resilience. Lahoti’s remarks position telecom as AI’s proving ground, where operational intelligence scales national connectivity while addressing escalating cybersecurity and efficiency demands.
