CM Yogi Inaugurates STPI’s 71st Centre in Gorakhpur

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the Software Technology Parks of India’s (STPI) 71st centre in Gorakhpur on March 26, strategically positioning Eastern Uttar Pradesh as the state’s next technology powerhouse. Located at GIDA Sector 7, the new facility marks a decisive push to democratise India’s $194 billion software export ecosystem, bringing world-class digital infrastructure to Tier-3 cities and unlocking opportunities for startups, IT firms and deep-tech innovators.

Eastern UP Targets National IT Export Leadership

The Gorakhpur STPI centre addresses a critical infrastructure gap in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, where over 1.5 million engineering and IT graduates enter the workforce annually but lack access to high-speed connectivity, incubation facilities and global market linkages. STPI’s expansion targets this talent pool, offering plug-and-play workspaces, 100 Gbps connectivity, cloud credits and R&D labs focused on AI, IoT, blockchain, machine learning and computer vision.

STPI Director General Arvind Kumar emphasised the centre’s alignment with the National Policy on Software Products 2019 (NPSP 2019), positioning it as a catalyst for India’s software product nation vision. “STPI registered units delivered ₹10.64 lakh crore in exports during FY24-25, with non-metro centres contributing 2.98 lakh direct jobs and 9,800 startup jobs,” Kumar stated during the inauguration.

Comprehensive Ecosystem for Deep-Tech Innovation

Beyond physical infrastructure, the Gorakhpur centre provides end-to-end support: skilling academies, IP facilitation, market intelligence, mentorship from 300+ global partners, and access to STPI’s Next Generation Incubation Scheme (NGIS). The scheme currently supports over 1,000 startups across 63 locations, with Gorakhpur earmarked for Safe & Trusted AI CoEs serving telecom, fintech, healthcare and citizen services.

Chief Minister Adityanath framed the inauguration as a cornerstone of UP’s decentralised growth model. “Gorakhpur will emerge as Uttar Pradesh’s next Silicon Valley, generating thousands of jobs and positioning Eastern UP on the global technology map,” he declared. The state government has committed land, power subsidies and single-window clearances to accelerate tenant onboarding.

Strategic Timing Aligns with National Digital Priorities

The launch gains added significance against Budget 2026’s aggressive push for AI data centres, semiconductors and deep tech sovereignty. MeitY Secretary S Krishnan recently likened data centre tax holidays to STPI’s 1990s role in launching India’s $150 billion software services revolution. Gorakhpur STPI extends this legacy into product innovation and Tier-3 scalability.

Recent STPI initiatives—including TRAI pre-summit events on AI in telecommunications and India AI Impact Summit 2026 preparations—position Gorakhpur as a testbed for production-grade AI governance frameworks. The centre will host quarterly hackathons, with winning solutions fast-tracked for government pilots.

Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration Drives Regional Transformation

The inauguration drew MeitY officials, UP PWD Minister Jitin Prasada, Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan, and STPI leadership alongside 200+ regional startup founders and IT firm representatives. A virtual tour showcased 50,000 sq ft of ready-to-move infrastructure, with first-phase capacity for 75 companies.

STPI’s collaborative model unites central schemes (Digital India, Startup India), state incentives (UP Electronics Manufacturing Policy) and private sector scale. Early commitments include three AI/ML firms, two blockchain startups and a regional cybersecurity incubator. Registration opened March 27; first cohort onboarding begins April 15.

Implications for India’s Non-Metro Tech Ambition

Gorakhpur STPI validates Tier-3 viability at national scale. With 70% of India’s IT talent outside top metros and Budget 2026 allocating ₹7,500 crore for 100 new digital hubs, STPI’s footprint expansion signals a structural shift from urban concentration to inclusive growth.

For CIOs, CTOs and startup founders, the centre offers immediate advantages: colocation with domain experts, government contract pipelines, and proximity to 50 million regional consumers. UP’s 25% annual electronics manufacturing growth provides ready enterprise customers.

The inauguration underscores a broader truth: India’s next technology wave will emerge from unexpected geographies, powered by deliberate infrastructure and policy alignment.
