Accenture Draws a Line on Claude Use After Some Staff Spent $1,000

Accenture has limited centrally funded spending on Anthropic’s Claude to $29 per employee per month, according to a report by 404 Media. Employees who go over must find project budgets to cover the extra use.

The policy took effect on October 1. Enterprises face rising costs as employees use AI tools for coding and other heavy tasks. Some Accenture employees reportedly spent $500 to $1,000 a month on Claude. That has raised concern over how limits could affect access to AI tools and their use in development work.

How the New Rule Works

The policy covers employees on Claude Enterprise. Extra usage is charged to individual projects, not a central budget. To pay for use beyond the monthly allowance, an employee must name a project in Accenture’s Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).

An internal announcement seen by 404 Media said all costs are consumption-based. That explains the move to project-level budgets for extra use.

Staff Look for Workarounds

Some employees are exploring higher usage tiers. 404 Media reported Claude’s Premium plan includes $250 in token usage per week. Some staff have asked for upgrades so they can avoid charging extra costs to their projects.

An internal message the outlet reviewed also showed that at least one employee had their Claude access revoked. Accenture’s internal notice said licences will be reviewed from time to time. They could be reassigned based on business priorities, job requirements, usage patterns and workforce needs.

The Cost Challenge for Enterprises

The policy shows how hard it is to balance AI adoption against the cost of heavy workloads. Coding tools such as Claude Code can use large numbers of tokens on complex development tasks. That makes spending hard to manage when many people use them.

AI assistants can help staff automate tasks and speed up software work. But usage-based pricing makes costs harder to predict, especially for teams that code for long sessions.

Accenture’s approach moves part of the responsibility for AI spending from central budgets to individual projects. Teams may now need to weigh the cost of extra usage against their budgets and the gains they expect.
