JSW Group is planning investments of nearly ₹50,000 crore in West Bengal across power, ports, cement, steel and other industrial businesses. Chairman Sajjan Jindal shared the plans after meeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna in Kolkata on Wednesday evening.
The proposed investment includes around ₹40,000 crore for the power sector and another ₹10,000 crore across other businesses. The meeting was Jindal’s first with Adhikari since he took office as Chief Minister.
According to the group, the discussions covered opportunities in power generation, power systems, ports, cement and steel.
Salboni to Anchor JSW’s Power Expansion
Salboni in West Midnapore district will remain central to JSW’s power expansion in the state. The group holds more than 3,800 acres of land in the area and is developing a thermal power project.
JSW had earlier announced an investment of ₹16,000 crore to build a 1,600 MW coal-fired power plant at Salboni. It is now planning another 1,600 MW unit, which would take the proposed capacity at the location to 3,200 MW.
The expansion will build on the group’s existing industrial presence in the area. JSW already operates a cement grinding facility at Salboni, alongside its ongoing power project.
Jindal expressed confidence in the state’s investment environment after meeting the Chief Minister. Speaking to The Telegraph about further expansion in Bengal, he said, Yes, absolutely. He also described Adhikari as supportive of investments in the state.
JSW Explores Further Opportunities in Port Infrastructure
Ports are another area of focus for the group. JSW Infrastructure is investing ₹1,500 crore to expand and modernize facilities at the Kolkata Dock System.
The group is also interested in the proposed deep-sea port at Dadanpatrabar. These developments form part of its wider interest in strengthening port infrastructure and logistics operations in West Bengal.
Alongside power and ports, JSW’s discussions with the state government also covered opportunities in cement, steel and power systems.
Investment Plans Cover Existing and Proposed Projects
The proposed ₹50,000 crore investment reflects JSW’s wider plans across West Bengal rather than a single new commitment announced at the meeting.
The power sector accounts for the largest identified share, with around ₹40,000 crore envisaged for expansion. The remaining ₹10,000 crore is planned across other businesses, although project-level allocations and implementation timelines have not been disclosed.
The latest discussions indicate JSW’s intention to expand its presence in the state through investments across energy, infrastructure and manufacturing.
