AEPC to Expand Indian Apparel Exports into New Markets by 2025-26

India’s apparel export sector is set to expand its global footprint in 2025-26, with a focus on diversifying into new and non-traditional markets, according to the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC). The move aims to boost exports and strengthen India’s position in the international textile and apparel industry.

Strong Growth Despite Global Challenges

The apparel sector recorded an 11.6% growth in exports, reaching approximately $13 billion between April 2024 and January 2025, despite global economic uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions. AEPC Chairman Sudhir Sekhri emphasized that expanding to newer markets will play a crucial role in sustaining this growth trajectory.

Government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, the extension of the Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL), and free trade agreements (FTAs) with the UAE and Australia are expected to further accelerate the sector’s export potential.

Growth in Key Export Markets

India’s traditional apparel export destinations continue to show healthy growth rates. AEPC Secretary General Mithileshwar Thakur highlighted that exports of ready-made garments (RMG) have increased significantly across major international markets:

  • 13.8% growth in the US
  • 8.9% increase in the UK
  • 10.6% rise in Germany
  • 19.7% surge in Spain

These figures demonstrate India’s strengthening foothold in global apparel trade, supported by competitive manufacturing, evolving trade policies, and growing demand for Indian textiles.

Expanding Into Non-Traditional Markets

To further scale exports, AEPC plans to promote Indian apparel in untapped markets, ensuring greater diversification and reduced dependency on traditional buyers. This strategy aligns with India’s broader vision of expanding its export portfolio and enhancing competitiveness in the global textile industry.

As India explores new trade partnerships and emerging apparel markets, the country’s textile and garment sector is expected to play a key role in boosting overall export performance, strengthening its position as a leading supplier in the global fashion and apparel industry.
