A large-scale cyber attack has disrupted Ukraine state railway network, Ukrzaliznytsia, affecting both passenger ticketing and online freight operations. The attack, which was first reported on Sunday, forced the rail company to temporarily switch to manual operations as IT teams worked to restore services.
Railways as a Strategic Target in Wartime
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the rail network has played a crucial role in transporting both civilians and military supplies, including weapons, fuel, and equipment. Given its strategic importance, Ukraine’s transportation infrastructure has become a key target in cyber warfare.
The railway outage initially affected ticketing systems, prompting passengers to purchase tickets on-site or directly on trains. However, the company later confirmed that freight operations were also hit, causing disruptions in cargo transportation to export ports and Ukraine’s western border crossings.
Ukraine’s Response: Switching to Manual Operations
To maintain operations, Ukrzaliznytsia implemented a paper-based document management system and issued instructions to railway employees and commercial clients on ordering and dispatching cargo manually.
“Our IT specialists and partners are working to restore freight services,” the company stated on Facebook, assuring customers that transportation is still operational despite digital disruptions.

Cyber Attack Suspected to Be of Russian Origin
Although no official attribution has been made, Ukrainian security officials speaking anonymously have suggested that Russia is likely behind the attack.
