U.S. House Bans WhatsApp Over Security Risks

The U.S. House of Representatives has formally banned the use of WhatsApp on official devices, citing security risks linked to the app’s data practices. In a memo circulated to all House staff, the Office of Cybersecurity labeled the Meta-owned platform as “high risk,” referencing its insufficient encryption transparency and unclear methods for user data protection. The recommendation urges House personnel to opt for alternatives such as Microsoft Teams, Apple’s iMessage, Amazon Wickr, or Signal.

Meta has pushed back against the ban, asserting that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption meets or exceeds the standards of its rivals. A spokesperson emphasized that the decision unfairly disregards WhatsApp’s security architecture, which has been independently vetted by cybersecurity experts. Still, House officials maintain that transparency and traceability in data usage—not just encryption—are central to institutional cybersecurity.
