Chinese tech giant Alibaba has invested in X Square Robot, a startup specializing in embodied AI and autonomous robotic systems. The move reflects Alibaba’s ongoing bet on AI-driven automation across logistics, manufacturing, and smart environments. While the exact size of the investment remains undisclosed, it forms part of X Square Robot’s Series B+ funding round, which has brought the company’s total valuation to $390 million.
Embodied AI, which enables robots to interact intelligently with their physical surroundings, is increasingly being seen as the next frontier in artificial intelligence. By combining spatial awareness with machine learning, these systems are designed to perform complex tasks in warehouses, distribution centers, and even urban environments.
Strategic push toward intelligent automation
X Square Robot develops autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that use AI to adapt to their environment and complete tasks with minimal human oversight. These robots are designed to support applications such as automated delivery, inventory handling, and industrial mobility in dynamic settings. The company’s platforms blend AI, sensors, navigation systems, and real-time feedback to optimize performance in unpredictable, real-world conditions.
Alibaba’s investment signals a clear intention to expand its capabilities in this area. The e-commerce and cloud services leader already operates highly automated warehouses under its logistics arm, Cainiao, and has previously tested delivery bots on campuses and public roads. The partnership with X Square Robot enhances Alibaba’s ability to deploy scalable, embodied AI systems across its vast supply chain.
China’s embodied AI race gains momentum
The backing of X Square Robot also reflects growing competition within China’s AI robotics ecosystem. Several local players, including Xiaomi-backed Segway-Ninebot and Meituan’s automation labs, are pushing to commercialize embodied AI use cases faster. With global supply chains becoming increasingly automated and labor costs rising, demand for intelligent robotics is surging.
Embodied AI has also caught the attention of global firms like Amazon and Nvidia. However, China’s homegrown companies, backed by major tech firms like Alibaba and Baidu, are racing to create native platforms suited to local industrial and urban needs. The goal is to reduce dependence on Western hardware ecosystems and create vertically integrated AI robotics solutions.
With this latest funding round, X Square Robot plans to scale manufacturing, expand R&D, and accelerate the deployment of its mobile robot fleets in industrial parks and commercial zones across China. As Alibaba intensifies its push into embodied AI, it may also influence robotics strategies across the broader Asia-Pacific region.
