Equinix Launches AI-Optimized CN1 Data Center in Chennai

Equinix, a global leader in digital infrastructure, has launched its first International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center in Chennai. The facility, known as CN1, is purpose-built to support high-performance computing and AI workloads, marking a major step in strengthening India’s AI and cloud ecosystem.

Situated in the Siruseri SIPCOT region of Tamil Nadu, CN1 spans nearly six acres and represents an initial investment of $69 million. It opens with a capacity of 800 cabinets and is designed to scale up to 4,250 cabinets, making it one of the most advanced and scalable data centers in the region.

Chennai Emerges as Key AI Hub

Equinix’s expansion comes as Tamil Nadu positions itself as a strategic destination for AI, innovation, and research. The CN1 facility offers low-latency connectivity to Equinix’s Mumbai data center campus and features native on-ramps to major cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud.

The Chennai facility is engineered for 99.999% uptime, supports liquid cooling for AI-driven compute, and features Equinix Fabric® for seamless hybrid multicloud connectivity. These features are especially vital as India intensifies its focus on emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and quantum computing.

AI-Optimized Infrastructure with Sustainability in Focus

Equinix CN1 is AI-ready, equipped to support compute-intensive workloads with advanced interconnection capabilities and liquid cooling readiness. With diverse fiber paths, scalable architecture, and fault-tolerant design, the facility addresses the growing demand for enterprise-grade infrastructure that supports AI deployment at scale.

The facility is also aligned with Equinix’s global sustainability goals. In 2024, the company achieved 96% renewable energy coverage across its global operations, including India. CN1’s launch reinforces this commitment with long-term investments in solar and wind energy to power data operations responsibly.

Driving India’s Digital Economy Forward

Manoj Paul, Managing Director of Equinix India, emphasized that CN1 will play a pivotal role in extending Equinix’s success from Mumbai to southern India. “This marks our expansion in India and a pivotal step in advancing the nation’s digitalization journey,” Paul said.

By hosting over 300 companies in India—including cloud, carrier, content, and enterprise players—Equinix continues to serve as a catalyst for digital transformation. The CN1 launch is expected to empower global enterprises looking to scale operations in India, offering robust, secure, and AI-optimized digital infrastructure.
