In a major stride toward AI-enabled drug development, UK-based pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has signed a licensing agreement worth up to $555 million with Algen Biotechnologies. The US-based startup, spun out of UC Berkeley, uses artificial intelligence to map genes to disease outcomes through its proprietary platform, AlgenBrain.
The deal gives AstraZeneca exclusive rights to develop and commercialise therapies discovered by Algen that target immune system-related disorders. It includes upfront payments and milestone-based incentives, but AstraZeneca has not taken an equity stake in the biotech firm.
AI Takes Center Stage in Drug Discovery
Algen’s platform leverages gene-editing and AI to accelerate the identification of novel disease targets. According to CEO Chun-Hao Huang, the collaboration with AstraZeneca will help “uncover new biological insights to accelerate the development of novel therapies.”
The partnership marks another significant investment by AstraZeneca in AI and gene therapy. Earlier this year, the company acquired Belgian biotech EsoBiotec for $1 billion, enhancing its cell engineering capabilities. Globally, pharma majors are increasingly betting on AI to improve the speed, cost-efficiency, and precision of drug development.
AstraZeneca’s respiratory and immunology portfolio brought in $4.23 billion in the first half of 2025, highlighting its strategic interest in immune-focused therapies. The Algen deal strengthens this pipeline by targeting diseases where conventional drug discovery has fallen short.
The Future of Precision Medicine
Algen’s technology builds on CRISPR advancements pioneered in the lab of Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna. The startup’s AI system rapidly correlates genetic data with disease outcomes—paving the way for faster, more targeted drug discovery. With backing from investors like Viking Global and Illumina, Algen is positioning itself as a next-gen platform for precision medicine.
While the deal does not involve equity sharing, it opens the door to future commercial collaborations and could serve as a model for how large pharma firms integrate AI-native platforms into their development pipelines.
