OpenAI has partnered with AMD to deploy 6 gigawatts (GW) of compute capacity, signaling one of the largest GPU procurement commitments in the AI industry to date. The deal will begin with an initial 1 GW deployment of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in the second half of 2026 and scale up from there, with future tranches tied to performance and deployment milestones.
The agreement is backed by a warrant allowing OpenAI to purchase up to 160 million shares of AMD stock at a nominal price of $0.01 per share. This would represent nearly 10% of AMD’s equity if fully exercised — a significant vote of confidence in AMD’s leadership in high-performance compute chips.
Scaling AI Infrastructure to Meet Surging Demand
As the demand for generative AI tools and services explodes globally, OpenAI’s latest move is part of a broader strategy to build a robust and diversified compute infrastructure. This collaboration builds on AMD’s earlier work powering OpenAI’s services via the MI300X series GPUs and strengthens the company’s foothold in a market long dominated by NVIDIA.
“AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
AMD CFO Jean Hu added that the deal is expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD while supporting OpenAI’s AI infrastructure buildout.
Expanding Beyond GPUs: The Stargate Vision
This partnership joins a wave of recent strategic deals by OpenAI to expand its compute capacity. In September, OpenAI signed an agreement with NVIDIA to deploy up to 10 GW of NVIDIA systems, and has also partnered with Oracle and SoftBank under the Stargate Project — a $500 billion initiative to build AI-first data center infrastructure across the United States.
Under Stargate, five new AI data centers are already underway in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, with major contributions from Microsoft, Arm, and MGX as well.
