Airtel to Build 24×7 Cyber Shield for Indian Railways

Bharti Airtel’s enterprise arm, Airtel Business, has signed a multi-year contract with the Indian Railway Security Operations Centre (IRSOC) to establish a 24×7 cybersecurity ecosystem that will protect the digital infrastructure of one of the world’s largest rail networks.

Building India’s Largest Rail Cyber Defense System

Under the agreement, Airtel Business will design, implement, and operate a multi-layered cybersecurity architecture to safeguard Indian Railways’ extensive IT systems. The system will protect data and ensure uninterrupted, secure digital operations across 26 locations, covering nearly 160,000 employees and over 190,000 connected infrastructure devices.

This initiative represents one of India’s most ambitious cybersecurity deployments in the public sector. The newly built Airtel Secure platform will serve as the central command hub for managing real-time threats, monitoring compliance, and streamlining security tools into a single interface. The integrated system will also enhance visibility across all railway digital assets, ensuring a uniform security posture across distributed networks.

Advanced AI and Threat Intelligence at the Core

A key highlight of the system is its AI-driven Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solution, which continuously monitors devices to identify and neutralize malicious activity. Advanced behavioral analytics and machine learning algorithms will enable real-time threat prediction, with a mean-time-to-detect (MTTD) of under 20 seconds.

The platform will incorporate next-generation threat intelligence and dark web monitoring to proactively identify risks before they impact operations. Additionally, robust patch and vulnerability management will allow central tracking of software health, ensuring timely updates and reduced exposure to cyberattacks.

Safeguarding a National Digital Lifeline

Indian Railways processes more than 20 million passenger journeys daily, operates 13,000 trains, and handles 1.5 billion tons of freight annually. This ecosystem depends on an enormous volume of digital transactions, from ticketing and freight tracking to signalling and payment systems.

Airtel Business’ cybersecurity framework will help shield this critical infrastructure from rising cyberthreats, protecting sensitive passenger and operational data. The initiative underscores the growing national emphasis on securing large-scale public digital systems, particularly as India’s economy becomes increasingly digital.

Once operational, the project is expected to enhance data security for over one billion Indians, ensuring safer, seamless experiences for passengers and businesses relying on the rail network.
