Gartner: Regular AI Audits Triple GenAI Business Value

A new survey by Gartner, Inc. reveals that organizations conducting regular audits and performance assessments of their AI systems are three times more likely to achieve high business value from Generative AI (GenAI) compared to those that don’t. The findings underscore a growing realization across industries that responsible AI governance isn’t just about compliance—it’s a core driver of measurable business outcomes.

The survey, conducted between May and June 2025 among 360 enterprises across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, highlights that companies prioritizing structured governance practices are consistently outperforming their peers in innovation, scalability, and risk management.

“AI governance really is a case of doing well by doing good,” said Kjell Carlsson, VP Analyst at Gartner. “Some governance practices merely reduce risk, but others actively boost the value organizations extract from their AI initiatives.”

Five Governance Practices that Drive GenAI Value

According to Gartner, five governance practices stand out as key enablers for maximizing GenAI returns:

  1. Regular System Assessments:
Continuous auditing and monitoring of AI systems help organizations maintain transparency, accountability, and performance accuracy. Companies implementing such programs were found to be over three times more likely to report strong GenAI outcomes.

  2. Customized Guidance and Training:
Organizations offering role-based AI training and ethical use programs were twice as likely to achieve higher value from AI deployments. Tailored education initiatives build user confidence while reducing misuse.

  3. AI-Specific Usage Policies:
Clearly defined policies outlining acceptable AI use help balance innovation with ethical responsibility and data protection.

  4. Investment in Governance Platforms:
Enterprises that adopted dedicated AI governance tools and products were 1.9 times more likely to report higher performance outcomes.

  5. Safe Expansion of GenAI Rollouts:
Businesses expanding AI access beyond limited pilot users while maintaining oversight were 3.3 times more likely to achieve strong GenAI ROI.

From Risk Mitigation to Strategic Advantage

The study marks a turning point in how organizations perceive AI governance—from a regulatory obligation to a strategic performance lever. Enterprises that have integrated governance into their digital frameworks are seeing improvements not only in compliance but also in innovation velocity, customer trust, and AI scalability.

Carlsson emphasized that proactive governance is especially vital as AI systems become embedded in decision-making processes across finance, healthcare, and manufacturing. “Enterprises that treat governance as a growth enabler will not just avoid risk—they’ll build competitive advantage,” he said.

Balancing Compliance, Ethics, and ROI

With increasing global scrutiny around algorithmic fairness and data privacy, the findings serve as a roadmap for organizations seeking to navigate the evolving AI landscape responsibly. Gartner’s insights reiterate that consistent oversight and investment in AI governance yield dividends far beyond compliance—they enable sustained innovation and trustworthy AI ecosystems.
