Bharti Airtel’s data centre arm Nxtra Data Limited secured a transformative $1 billion funding round valuing the company at $3.1 billion post-money, led by Alpha Wave Global ($435 million), Carlyle ($240 million), and Anchorage Capital ($35 million) with Airtel maintaining controlling stake through its participation. The capital injection fuels Nxtra’s ambitious expansion from current 300 MW capacity to 1 GW within years, targeting 25% share of India’s exploding AI and cloud infrastructure market projected to reach 3.4 GW by 2030.
Nxtra operates 14 core data centres and 120+ edge facilities nationwide, distinguished by AI-powered predictive maintenance, energy optimisation, and automated operations delivering industry-leading PUE ratings. Executive Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal positioned the raise as infrastructure leadership: “Our sustainable network meets enterprises, hyperscalers, and government demands at AI scale.”
Hyperscale Partnerships Anchor Aggressive Growth
Google’s $15 billion commitment to a 1 GW AI campus with AdaniConneX in Vizag underscores Nxtra’s positioning, complemented by new AI-ready facilities in Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Savills India forecasts 21% CAGR through 2030, driven by ChatGPT/Claude-like platform proliferation demanding massive GPU clusters.
Alpha Wave Co-Founder Rick Gerson emphasised: “Nxtra captures India’s digital infrastructure tailwinds as AI-first businesses proliferate.” Carlyle Partner Kapil Modi added: “Our deepened partnership positions Nxtra for sustained leadership.”
Enterprise AI Infrastructure at Scale
Nxtra’s value proposition centres sustainable, sovereign-grade colocation, cloud, and disaster recovery services optimised for AI workloads. AI-driven operations minimise downtime to 99.999% uptime while optimising energy across liquid-cooled GPU racks.
The funding arrives as Budget 2026 grants data centres infrastructure status with tax holidays, accelerating private investment. Airtel retains strategic control while unlocking growth capital for nationwide hyperscale buildout.
Vittal concluded: “From 300 MW today to 1 GW tomorrow, Nxtra builds India’s AI backbone.”
