BNP Paribas and Google Cloud announced a new five-year partnership, expanding the bank’s access to Google Cloud’s infrastructure and advanced AI tools, including Gemini Enterprise and Gemini models.
Powering a Broader Push Into Agentic AI
The partnership will support BNP Paribas as it moves toward wider deployment of agentic AI, AI systems capable of independently completing tasks rather than simply answering questions. It also reinforces the bank’s existing multi-cloud, multi-model strategy, all operating within its established security and data governance framework.
Marc Campus, Group Chief Information Officer at BNP Paribas exclaimed that our role is to empower our businesses with the technology capabilities they need while maintaining a consistent framework for security and control
He noted that a multi-cloud, multi-model approach gives the bank flexibility to choose the right model, infrastructure, and level of control for each use case, balancing cost, quality, and security.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian framed the partnership as part of a larger industry shift. “Agentic AI marks a critical shift in how global financial institutions streamline operations, assess risk, and serve their clients,” he said, describing the deal as combining BNP Paribas banking expertise with Google Cloud’s secure infrastructure and Gemini Enterprise to deploy intelligent agents across the bank’s platforms.
Starting With Corporate and Institutional Banking
The initial rollout will focus on BNP Paribas’ Corporate & Institutional Banking (CIB) division. Planned use cases include deploying AI agents to help prepare corporate credit memos, with further applications expected across sales, trading, research, and structuring activities. Gemini models will also be integrated into LLM@CIB, the division’s internal generative AI assistant, which is already used by more than 65,000 employees.
Charles Holive said that their approach to AI starts with the business need, Chief AI Officer at BNP Paribas CIB. “We assess which technology is best suited to each use case and deploy it within the bank’s security and governance framework. Agentic AI can help our teams handle more complex workflows while maintaining the appropriate level of control.”
Google Cloud and Gemini are already live elsewhere in the bank. At Nickel, BNP Paribas’ payment account business, Gemini powers Nickel Assist, helping roughly 200 customer advisers respond to customer requests based on the company’s internal procedures and operating guidelines.
Security Remains Central to the Rollout
Any use of Google Cloud will operate strictly within BNP Paribas’ existing security and data governance rules, which dictate what types of data and workloads can run in a public cloud environment – with certain categories of data excluded from public cloud storage entirely.
Security is described as a core pillar of the bank’s agentic AI strategy: each AI agent is authenticated individually and granted access only to the specific resources needed for its assigned task, with all agent connections to the bank’s information systems continuously monitored and controlled.
The partnership also feeds into BNP Paribas’ broader, Group-wide AI adoption program, which already offers employees learning paths ranging from foundational AI literacy to specialized AI agent development.
