Singapore’s President Flags a New Divergence Risk as AI Reshapes Work

Artificial intelligence is actively shrinking the job market for recent university graduates, a growing crisis that Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam urged world leaders to address immediately during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, according to Reuters.

In his view, the issue needs attention very soon.

Less Demand for Entry-Level Roles

Shanmugaratnam said the first step on the job ladder is now seeing weaker demand. For graduates, that means the first job after university is harder to find. The evidence is already clear, he said. It is strongest in the sectors most exposed to AI.

A Risk of Widening Gaps Between Economies

He also warned about the wider picture. The world should avoid a “new divergence” between developing and advanced economies, he said. AI-driven disruption could create that gap if it goes unchecked.
