TCS Wants 80% of Its New Hires to Bring Digital and AI Skills

About 80% of TCS’s future recruits will have digital and AI skills, a senior company executive told PTI. India’s largest IT services firm is shifting its workforce as AI-led work grows.

AI-led work rose to 10% of overall revenue in the September quarter. TCS says a bigger share of AI revenue will help lift its profit margins. They still sit below the company’s target levels.

A Hiring Mix Tilted Towards AI

TCS added 4,500 people in the second quarter. Chief Operating Officer Arathi Subramanian said 25% to 30% of them are pure AI talent. About 80% in total are new-age hires. She was asked whether this mix will continue. She said yes and added that the talent is available in the market.

Experience Still Counts

Freshers know AI well and cost less. Would that give them an edge over mid-career staff? Subramanian said the shift favours people who are ready to unlearn and learn. CEO and Managing Director K Krithivasan agreed that experience matters. A mid-level engineer who is keen to learn has a clear advantage, he said. They already understand the technology landscape and the domain. A junior engineer may not have that depth.

Niche Talent and Margins

Krithivasan said TCS will keep investing in niche talent. Mergers, acquisitions and partnerships will also be key investment areas. Growing AI revenue should also help profitability, he said. As the volume of AI deals rises, more margin will follow.
