AWS Seeks Clearance for $430M Navi Mumbai Data Centre Campus

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has submitted an application for environmental clearance to build a $429.8 million data centre campus near Taloja in Navi Mumbai on a 49-acre plot acquired from Macrotech Developers for ₹450 crore in late 2024. The facility will feature six buildings, including four seven-storey data halls and two two-storey support structures for electrical and water infrastructure, with a total capacity of 473MW.

The project, filed with the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) on April 3, spans 197,692 square metres with 393,937 square metres of built-up construction area. The site borders Asode and Burdul villages in Navi Mumbai, located east of Mumbai city.

Latest AWS Land Acquisition

AWS purchased the Taloja plot from Macrotech Developers (Lodha Group) in November 2024. The company also acquired 38.18 acres from Lodha in Palava near Navi Mumbai in December 2024, indicating continued infrastructure expansion in the region.

AWS committed $35 billion to India through 2030, including $8.3 billion for its Asia Pacific (Mumbai) cloud region and $7 billion for Hyderabad data centre growth. The Mumbai region launched in 2016 with $3.7 billion invested through 2022; Hyderabad followed in 2022.

Navi Mumbai Data Centre Ecosystem

The area already hosts facilities from STT GDC, LNT, Sify, Colt, Equinix and Bridge Data Centres. STT GDC held a groundbreaking ceremony in March 2026 for a campus near the AWS site, also bordering Asode and Burdul villages.

Mumbai remains India’s largest data centre hub with 49% of operational capacity. Navi Mumbai benefits from proximity to financial services, submarine cable connectivity and available industrial land.

Infrastructure Requirements

The campus requires 473MW of daily electricity once operational. AWS plans evaporative cooling systems expected to generate 8 kilolitres of mineral-rich wastewater daily. The company targets scaling total India capacity toward 3 gigawatts.
