C-DOT and IIT Bombay Unite for 6G Chipset

The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, has signed an agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) to develop an “Optical Transceiver Chipset for High-Bandwidth 6G Wireless Links.”

This collaboration is part of the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) 6G initiative. The initiative aims to accelerate research and development in next-generation telecommunications technology. It aligns with India’s vision to lead in 6G technology by 2030. The focus remains on affordability, sustainability, and ubiquity.

Transformative 6G Technology

The project focuses on developing chipsets for high-bandwidth free-space coherent optical links. These advanced links will support 6G applications, including last-mile high-speed connectivity in rural and remote areas, where deploying optical fibers poses challenges. Additionally, the technology aims to provide uninterrupted high-bandwidth communication via satellite links, ensuring reliable connectivity in difficult terrains.

Strengthening Indigenous Innovation

The agreement was signed during a ceremony attended by key figures, including C-DOT CEO Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay and IIT Bombay’s principal investigator, Prof. Shalabh Gupta. Speaking at the event, Dr. Upadhyay highlighted the importance of indigenously designed technologies in addressing India’s unique communication needs. He reaffirmed C-DOT’s commitment to fulfilling the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision and advancing the Bharat 6G initiative.

Prof. Gupta expressed his gratitude to DoT and C-DOT for the opportunity, emphasizing that the collaboration strengthens India’s cutting-edge research capabilities in the telecom sector.
