Chhattisgarh Gets First Semiconductor Plant

In a major boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions, Chennai-based Polymatech Electronics has announced the establishment of a ₹1,143 crore Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductor manufacturing plant in Nava Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai laid the foundation stone for the state’s first semiconductor facility on Friday, marking a significant milestone for local advanced manufacturing.

Supporting India’s Digital and Strategic Goals

The facility will be dedicated to the production of GaN semiconductor chips—critical components for emerging technologies such as 5G, 6G, EV charging, radars, and data centers. By setting up the 150,000 square-foot plant in Sector 5 of Nava Raipur, Polymatech aims to reduce India’s dependence on semiconductor imports while bolstering its position in global value chains.

The project is aligned with national missions such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and has emerged from a growing demand for semiconductors in India. Projections estimate that national demand will hit $64 billion by 2026 and $110 billion by 2030.

Strategic Collaboration and Industrial Momentum

Speaking at the event, Eswara Rao Nandam, MD & CEO of Polymatech Electronics, said, “This plant will play a pivotal role in India’s journey toward becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.” The GaN chips produced here will also support sectors like telecom, defence, solar energy, and electric mobility.

Ashok Chandak, President of the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), noted that member companies have already committed over $20 billion to semiconductor initiatives across India. The Chhattisgarh facility represents the latest wave of this momentum.

Policy Backing and Future Plans

The project has been facilitated through the Nava Raipur Development Authority’s tender process, with the state government pledging continued support through incentives, infrastructure, and policy frameworks to attract high-tech manufacturing investments.

This announcement follows Chhattisgarh’s ‘Investor Connect’ programme held in New Delhi in December 2024 and an MoU signed with IESA during a Bengaluru roadshow. Rajat Kumar, Secretary of Commerce and Industry, highlighted that the collaboration will not only elevate Chhattisgarh’s industrial standing but also create thousands of jobs while enabling the state to contribute meaningfully to India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
