Enterprises Claim 42% Gig Share as Tier-2 Cities Hit 38.8% by FY27: foundit

India’s gig economy has transitioned from startup-driven volume hiring to enterprise-led capability deployment, with MNCs and large organisations now accounting for 42% of all gig jobs according to foundit latest Insights Tracker. White-collar gig positions expanded from 6.8 million in FY25 to 8.23 million in FY26, with projections reaching 10.2 million by FY27, reflecting structural shifts toward flexible, high-skill talent models amid GCC expansion and AI specialisation demands.

While overall hiring activity moderated slightly in March 2026 (-5% MoM, +1% YoY), gig demand accelerates particularly in Tier-2 cities and remote senior roles. “The market evolves from volume opportunities to capability ecosystems,” said Anupama Bhimrajka, foundit VP Marketing. Enterprises increasingly deploy gig talent to address AI skill gaps and project-based needs where traditional full-time hiring proves too rigid.

Location-Wise Gig Hiring Evolution

Tier-2 cities emerge as the fastest growth segment, challenging metro dominance through cost advantages, expanding IT ecosystems, and improved infrastructure connectivity.

Strategic Implications for Enterprises

The data signals three structural shifts:

  1. Tier-2 acceleration creates new talent arbitrage opportunities as infrastructure gaps narrow
  2. Enterprise-scale gig adoption reflects maturing risk frameworks and compliance maturity
  3. Remote senior hiring enables global capability access without relocation premiums

GCCs drive much of this transformation, establishing satellite development centres and analytics hubs across Tier-2 ecosystems. AI/ML roles, digital transformation projects, and cybersecurity engagements dominate high-value gig demand.

India’s 10.2 million white-collar gig projection by FY27 positions the country to capture significant share of global flexible talent demand, provided ecosystem platforms continue investing in compliance, skill verification, and cross-border capabilities.
