India Expands AI Supercomputing Infrastructure for All

India is accelerating the creation of a national high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure as part of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Mission, ensuring equitable access to advanced technologies for startups, innovators, and researchers. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Global Fintech Fest 2025, the initiative aims to make powerful computing resources and AI tools accessible at low cost, fostering a new era of inclusive digital innovation.

Democratizing AI for Every District and Citizen

The Prime Minister highlighted that India’s AI strategy revolves around three guiding principles — equitable access, population-scale reach, and responsible deployment. These pillars reflect a vision where technology is not confined to urban or elite users but distributed evenly across India’s social and geographic spectrum.

“India is bringing AI benefits to every district and every language,” Modi said, noting that new centres of excellence, skilling hubs, and indigenous AI models are being deployed nationwide to ensure that no innovator is left behind. By integrating AI into regional ecosystems, India aims to build a technology base that supports local languages, regional entrepreneurship, and public service delivery.

Digital Public Infrastructure: A Global Model

Modi emphasized that India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) — which includes UPI, Aadhaar-enabled Payment System, DigiLocker, GeM, ONDC, Bharat QR, BBPS, DigiYatra, and the upcoming Open Credit Enablement Network (OCEN) — has become a model of technology-led inclusion. Over 50% of the world’s real-time digital transactions now occur in India, a figure that reflects how deeply digital tools have penetrated daily life.

He reiterated that India’s experience in building scalable, secure, and inclusive digital systems can serve as a “ray of hope for the Global South”, particularly for developing nations aiming to replicate India’s success in financial inclusion and e-governance.

The Prime Minister also referenced the UK–India Fintech Corridor, a partnership designed to link the UK’s financial expertise with India’s digital scale and talent base — creating opportunities for startups, joint ventures, and cross-border innovation between London Stock Exchange and GIFT City.

Ethical AI and Global Cooperation

Reaffirming India’s commitment to ethical AI, Modi said the nation has already implemented a “trust layer” that safeguards both data and privacy. This framework underpins India’s AI mission, ensuring that innovation remains human-centric and focused on public good.

He announced that India will host the AI Impact Summit in 2026, which will serve as a platform for global cooperation on AI governance, digital inclusion, and sustainable technology. Modi invited global investors to “grow with India’s growth,” positioning the country as a digital partner for the world.

India’s AI mission, he said, is about more than algorithms and computing power — it’s about ensuring that technology, people, and the planet thrive together. By aligning scale with sustainability, and innovation with inclusion, India aims to redefine what responsible AI leadership looks like on the world stage.
