India Receives $1.16 Billion in Climate Funding

India has secured $1.16 billion in funding for climate projects through the financial mechanisms of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), according to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Yadav provided a breakdown of the funding, which includes:

  • $803.9 million from the Green Climate Fund
  • $346.52 million from the Global Environment Facility
  • $16.86 million from the Adaptation Fund

Despite this international support, the minister emphasized that most of India’s initiatives are financed through domestic resources.

Adaptation and Resilience Measures

Yadav noted that India has been actively implementing policies and initiatives across various economic sectors to enhance adaptation and resilience. The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture is a key initiative to mitigate the change’s impact on agriculture, as projections suggest that crop yields may decline without proper adaptation strategies.

The government has also scaled up resource mobilisation for action in successive Union Budgets. For 2023-24, the focus was on greening the economy, while the 2025-26 budget introduced measures to improve resilience, particularly in agriculture and allied sectors.

Key Measures in the 2025-26 Budget

Major climate adaptation measures announced in the latest budget include:

  • PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana
  • National Mission on High Yielding Seeds
  • Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses
  • Comprehensive programme for vegetables and fruits
  • Framework for sustainable fisheries in exclusive economic zones

These initiatives aim to reduce vulnerabilities and foster long-term adaptation to climate change impacts across multiple sectors.
