India to Launch AI Compute Portal, Secures 14,000 GPUs

The Indian government is set to launch the IndiaAI Compute Portal within the next week, providing AI computing resources for central ministries, state governments, and research institutions. The initiative, confirmed by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to accelerate AI-driven innovations by subsidizing around 40% of AI compute costs for eligible stakeholders.

Ten Firms to Supply 14,000 GPUs

As part of its AI mission, the government has procured 14,000 GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) from ten companies that placed the lowest bids. The largest contribution comes from Yotta Data Services, which will provide 9,216 GPUs, including 8,192 Nvidia H100 chips—one of the most powerful AI accelerators available.

Other key providers include:

  • AWS (Amazon Web Services) – Supplying 1,200 low-end GPUs via four managed service providers: CMS Computers, Locuz Enterprise Solutions, Orient Technologies, and Vensysco Technologies. The GPUs include AWS Inferentia 2 and Trainium 1 chips.
  • Jio Platforms – Delivering 208 Nvidia H200 GPUs and 104 AMD MI300X GPUs. The company is expected to bid for additional GPUs in the upcoming procurement round on April 30.
  • Tata Communications, E2E Networks, and CtrlS Datacenters – Also contributing GPUs for AI development.

Advancing India’s AI Capabilities

The IndiaAI Compute Mission is part of the country’s broader push to develop homegrown AI models and compete with international AI giants. This initiative follows China’s DeepSeek project, which has made significant strides in AI computing infrastructure.

The newly acquired GPU clusters will be used by Indian research institutions, startups, and government agencies to develop AI-driven applications such as generative AI, chatbots, and foundational models.

With AI emerging as a strategic sector, India’s AI compute initiative is expected to strengthen domestic AI research, reduce dependency on global tech firms, and enhance innovation in the space.
