IndiaAI Begins GPU and Data Lab Rollout Nationwide

The IndiaAI Mission has begun deploying advanced GPU infrastructure and data labs across the country, marking a major milestone in India’s AI readiness journey. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) and supported by the Digital India Corporation, aims to equip academic, research, and startup ecosystems with the tools necessary to build cutting-edge AI models.

The mission’s current phase includes pilot rollouts of compute capacity to 20 partner institutions, with select IITs and NITs receiving early access to GPU clusters. These nodes are part of a planned distributed AI infrastructure that will eventually serve as a national backbone for model training, AI research, and innovation.

Enabling open-source model development and research

According to officials involved in the rollout, the GPU and data lab deployment will help bridge the resource gap for smaller institutions and startups that lack access to high-performance computing. The initiative supports the development of indigenous foundational models, including large language models (LLMs), domain-specific datasets, and open-source AI tools that align with India’s linguistic, demographic, and sectoral diversity.

The mission will also integrate this infrastructure with the broader IndiaAI innovation ecosystem, including AI Centres of Excellence, the India Datasets Platform, and startup support programs. MeitY has set a goal to democratize access to compute power while ensuring that the infrastructure remains scalable and secure.

Strategic push for self-reliant AI capabilities

This deployment comes on the heels of the IndiaAI Mission receiving Cabinet approval with an outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore. The mission focuses on building a robust AI innovation pipeline across compute infrastructure, data platforms, and AI talent.

In the coming months, IndiaAI is expected to scale its deployments to reach over 100 institutions and support thousands of startups working on AI in agriculture, healthcare, governance, and education. By laying the physical groundwork for a national AI backbone, the initiative strengthens India’s ambition to become a global leader in responsible, open-source-driven AI.
