The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has emerged as a transformative force in India’s public procurement landscape, fostering transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency. Since its launch in 2016 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, GeM has created a level playing field for businesses of all sizes, enabling startups, women entrepreneurs, and MSMEs to participate in government contracts.
Driving Economic Opportunities
GeM has facilitated ₹35,950 crore worth of orders from startups, while women entrepreneurs, constituting 8% of the seller base, have fulfilled orders worth ₹46,615 crore. The platform’s focus on openness, fairness, and inclusiveness has enabled a diverse range of businesses to engage with government buyers.
Key Initiatives Enhancing Participation
To further empower small businesses and underrepresented groups, GeM has introduced several initiatives:
- SWAYATT: Encourages ease of doing business for startups, women entrepreneurs, and marginalized communities by facilitating onboarding and training.
- Startup Runway 2.0: Provides a dedicated space for startups to showcase innovative products and services, promoting “Make in India” initiatives.
- Womaniya: Supports women-led businesses by highlighting their products and ensuring a minimum 3% procurement target from women MSMEs.
- MSME SC/ST Entrepreneurs: Aims to achieve the 25% mandatory procurement target from MSMEs, with a 4% sub-target for SC/ST entrepreneurs.
- The SARAS Collection: Features handcrafted products from self-help groups, promoting traditional craftsmanship in public procurement.
Expanding Market Reach
GeM has witnessed exponential growth, recording over 61.2 lakh orders worth ₹4.52 lakh crore in the current financial year. Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) account for 37.87% of the total order value, highlighting the platform’s role in fostering local business growth.
