Maharashtra Plans AI Policy, Innovation City, and GCC Hubs for Growth

The Maharashtra government is formulating a dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) policy and developing global capability center (GCC) parks to accelerate technological innovation in the state. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced these initiatives while addressing the Nasscom Tech Leadership Forum in Mumbai on Monday.

AI and Tech Innovation to Fuel Maharashtra’s Trillion-Dollar Economy Goal

Maharashtra has recorded a 10% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past seven years, excluding the pandemic period. Fadnavis emphasized that technology, particularly AI-driven advancements, will play a pivotal role in helping Maharashtra achieve its goal of becoming a trillion-dollar economy within the next four to five years.

The state’s government advisory council, chaired by Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, has outlined a roadmap toward achieving this economic milestone, with technology expected to contribute significantly to Maharashtra’s growth.

Mission AI: Maharashtra’s Vision for Artificial Intelligence Adoption

The Maharashtra government has launched an AI mission aimed at integrating AI across multiple sectors. Fadnavis revealed that a team of business leaders with expertise in AI is currently drafting a new AI policy to foster innovation and adoption across industries.

The state government has already begun incorporating AI into its daily operations, including an AI-powered tool that summarizes large government files to streamline decision-making and improve workflow efficiency.

Innovation City: Maharashtra’s Hub for Future Technologies

The state has allocated 300 acres for the development of Innovation City, a project designed to attract AI-driven businesses, startups, and research institutions. Fadnavis invited the tech community to contribute to shaping the city’s framework, adding that N Chandrasekaran is leading the drafting of a white paper on its structure and vision.

Once finalized, the Innovation City blueprint will be open for industry feedback, ensuring collaboration between the government and private sector stakeholders.

Maharashtra’s Growing Focus on Global Capability Centers (GCCs)

With India emerging as a preferred destination for global firms setting up offshore capability centers, Maharashtra is positioning itself as a GCC hub. The state is developing a dedicated GCC park in Navi Mumbai and expanding opportunities for GCCs in Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad).

To support tech-driven industries and ensure infrastructure readiness, Maharashtra plans to increase its power generation capacity from 45 gigawatts to 75 gigawatts by 2030, ensuring a stable power supply for businesses and innovation hubs.
