Microsoft is expanding its AI ecosystem by integrating the open Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol—originally developed by Google—into Azure AI Foundry and Copilot Studio. The move is aimed at enabling AI agents to collaborate across multiple platforms, clouds, and organisational boundaries with a focus on security, visibility, and seamless interoperability.
Building Secure and Structured AI Workflows
The A2A protocol provides structured mechanisms for AI agents to exchange goals, manage operational states, invoke actions, and return results securely. By adopting A2A, Azure AI Foundry users will be able to build complex multi-agent workflows that maintain governance, visibility, and adherence to enterprise-grade service level agreements (SLAs).
These new capabilities will enable secure communication across internal and external AI agents, integrating tools like Semantic Kernel and LangChain under robust enterprise safeguards, including mutual TLS, Entra identity frameworks, Azure AI Content Safety, and audit logging.
Responding to Growing Enterprise Demand for Interoperability
The move comes amid rising adoption of Microsoft’s AI offerings, with over 10,000 organisations adopting the Agent Service and 230,000 companies, including 90% of the Fortune 500, using Copilot Studio. As enterprises increasingly scale AI solutions across departments and cloud providers, the need for interoperability has become critical.

Microsoft’s support for open standards like A2A reflects a shift towards collaborative AI ecosystems where businesses can integrate various AI models without vendor lock-in, providing flexibility, security, and operational transparency.
Contributions to Open Standards and Future Developments
To further support the initiative, Microsoft has joined the Agent2Agent working group on GitHub and is contributing to the protocol’s development. A public preview of A2A support in Azure AI Foundry and Copilot Studio is expected soon.
The integration of A2A is part of Microsoft’s broader vision for what it calls the “agentic web”—an emerging paradigm where AI agents are designed to operate across diverse models, infrastructures, and work environments, enabling a new generation of adaptive, collaborative enterprise software.
