Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that India’s textile sector will surpass its ₹9 lakh crore (₹9 trillion) annual export target ahead of the 2030 deadline. Speaking at Bharat Tex 2025, Modi highlighted India’s strong textile export trajectory, emphasizing that the industry is set to grow threefold in the coming years.
Currently, India ranks as the sixth-largest exporter of textiles and apparel globally, with export valued at approximately ₹3 lakh crore. Modi credited this success to the consistent policies and reforms implemented over the past decade, which have doubled foreign investment in the textile sector.
Government Support and Budget Allocations
The Indian government has been actively supporting the textile industry through strategic initiatives and financial investments. The Union Budget 2025-26 allocated ₹500 crore for the National Cotton Technology Mission, a key part of the five-year Cotton Mission, which aims to boost cotton productivity, particularly in extra-long staple varieties.
Additionally, the Ministry of Textiles received a budget outlay of ₹5,272 crore, marking a 19% increase from the previous year’s allocation of ₹4,417 crore.
Bharat Tex 2025: A Global Textile Showcase
The Bharat Tex 2025 expo, held from February 14-17 in New Delhi, is India’s largest textile industry event, bringing together stakeholders from over 120 countries. The event is a global platform to showcase India’s textile ecosystem and innovation in high-grade carbon fibre manufacturing.
During his address, Modi urged India’s banking sector to extend financial support to textile enterprises, highlighting that an investment of ₹75 crore in a textile unit can generate 2,000 jobs.
India’s Competitive Edge in Textiles
The textile sector contributes 11% to India’s manufacturing GDP and is one of the largest employment generators. India’s textile and apparel exports recorded 7% growth last year, reflecting strong international demand.

The Prime Minister also outlined his “5F Vision” for the textile industry, which focuses on:

This vision aims to integrate farmers, weavers, designers, and traders into a unified growth strategy to boost exports and global competitiveness.
Industry-Academia Collaboration for Innovation
To drive technological advancements in the textile sector, Modi encouraged textile companies to collaborate with leading academic institutions like IITs for developing innovative solutions.
