Mumbai Police Launch AI Crime Forecasting Tool

In a pioneering collaboration, the Mumbai Police and K J Somaiya Institute of Technology have developed a suite of AI-based tools aimed at boosting law enforcement effectiveness. These advanced systems—focused on crime forecasting and charge sheet digitisation—are being deployed across the eastern region of Mumbai, covering 18 police stations and more than 600 officers in Zones 6 (Mulund to Ghatkopar) and 7 (Shivaji Nagar to Sion).

AI-Powered Crime Forecasting With 75% Accuracy

As reported by Hindustan Times, centrepiece of the initiative is an AI-based predictive policing system, developed by final-year BTech students under the guidance of Prof. Radhika Kotecha, Head of the Department of Information Technology. Trained on five years of historical crime data, the system uses machine learning techniques—including the Haversine formula for spatial mapping and Hierarchical Density-Based Clustering—to analyse patterns and forecast criminal activity.

The model currently focuses on high-incidence crimes such as mobile theft, vehicle theft, and chain-snatching. During its pilot run in March 2025, the system reached an accuracy rate of 75% and helped police avert at least three incidents. Weekly PDF reports provide officers with predictions on likely crime types, hotspots, and time windows. Monthly summaries highlight crime trends to inform long-term planning.

Bridging Law Enforcement and Academia

The collaboration began after an AI training session conducted in February for officers in the east region. A conversation between Prof. Kotecha and DCP Navnath Dhavale inspired the concept, which was rapidly brought to life by a student team—Hemanshu Rajde, Chirayu Agrawal, Dhruv Mokashe, and Jatin Soneta—alongside junior contributors. The data collection was coordinated with support from PSI Rushikesh Babar and local police stations.

Charge Sheet Digitisation Tool Also in the Works

In addition to the crime forecasting tool, the partnership is developing a digital charge sheet management system aimed at modernising the documentation and legal workflow process. Though still under wraps, this second tool is expected to reduce delays and enhance case tracking capabilities for law enforcement officials.

This initiative highlights the growing role of academic institutions in supporting public service innovation and showcases how AI can be adapted for real-world policing challenges.
