Odisha is set to strengthen its position in India’s semiconductor industry with the establishment of a ₹2,500 crore Compound Semiconductor Facility by SiCSem Private Limited in Bhubaneswar. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi performed the virtual groundbreaking ceremony for the project on Tuesday at the Utkarsh Odisha – Make in Odisha Conclave 2025.
This is Odisha’s second major semiconductor project. It follows RIR Power Electronics’ silicon carbide facility, which began construction in September 2024. The RIR facility is located at EMC Park, Infovalley. It strengthens Odisha’s role in semiconductor manufacturing.
A Boost for India’s Semiconductor Industry
The upcoming facility will integrate the entire power semiconductor manufacturing process. This includes raw materials to silicon carbide crystal ingot growth, wafer slicing, polishing, and fabrication. These electronic power devices will serve critical industries, including:
- Electric Vehicles (EVs)
- Energy Storage Systems
- Fast Chargers & Green Energy
- Industrial Tools & Data Centers
- Consumer Appliances
The Odisha state government approved the project in the 34th High-Level Clearing Authority (HLCA) meeting and allotted 14.32 acres of land at Infovalley-2 for its development.
Government’s Vision for Semiconductor Growth
Speaking at the event, CM Majhi emphasized that the project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to establish India as a global semiconductor hub.
“This project of SiCSem marks another milestone in our journey toward achieving semiconductor self-reliance,” Majhi stated.
The event was attended by Union Minister for Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw, Odisha Electronics & IT Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, and SiCSem Director Ranjit Pendurthi.
Odisha’s Growing Semiconductor Footprint
With two major semiconductor projects now in progress, Odisha is positioning itself as an emerging hub for high-tech electronics manufacturing. The state’s proactive policies and investment-friendly initiatives are attracting key players in chip manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication, and electronics production.
