Orbital Materials Partners with AWS to Drive Innovation in Data Center Decarbonization

Orbital Materials (Orbital), a pioneer in AI-driven materials and climate technologies, has entered into a multi-year partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Together, they aim to develop advanced solutions for data center decarbonization and operational efficiency using cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

Orbital leverages its proprietary AI platform to design, test, and synthesize advanced materials for carbon removal and cooling technologies integrated into data centers. This partnership will focus on evaluating the performance and scalability of these innovations to reduce carbon footprints and optimize energy usage.

Transforming Materials Development with AI

Traditional advanced material development has long relied on time-intensive trial-and-error methods. Orbital’s AI-driven generative design process revolutionizes this approach, delivering faster and more effective material discovery.

Since launching its research lab in early 2024, Orbital has achieved a tenfold improvement in material performance, demonstrating the efficacy of its platform in accelerating innovation. The company plans to test its proprietary carbon removal technology at scale by the end of 2025, marking a significant step forward in decarbonization.

“Partnering with AWS accelerates our mission to deploy advanced technologies that enhance data center sustainability. Together, we aim to innovate in areas like cooling, water utilization, and carbon removal,” said Jonathan Godwin, CEO of Orbital Materials.

Expanding AI Accessibility with ‘Orb’

As part of the collaboration, Orbital’s open-source AI model, Orb, will be made accessible to AWS customers through Amazon SageMaker JumpStart and AWS Marketplace. This milestone marks the debut of an AI-for-materials simulation tool on AWS platforms, providing researchers in fields such as semiconductors, batteries, and electronics access to cutting-edge R&D tools within a secure cloud environment.

Orbital will also utilize AWS’s Amazon SageMaker HyperPod for pre-training and fine-tuning its Foundation Models, alongside evaluating AWS Trainium custom silicon to optimize deep learning workloads for cost and performance.

“AWS is proud to collaborate with Orbital to accelerate the development of sustainability technologies,” said Howard Gefen, General Manager of AWS Energy & Utilities. “Through tools like Amazon SageMaker HyperPod and Trainium, and by integrating Orb into our platforms, we’re enabling widespread access to innovative solutions for advanced materials and sustainable progress.”

Redefining Climate Technology Development

This partnership highlights a transformative approach to climate technology innovation. By combining Orbital’s proprietary AI capabilities with AWS’s robust cloud infrastructure, the collaboration addresses the urgent need for data center decarbonization, paving the way for sustainable digital transformation.
