Tata Power to Double Tirunelveli Solar Capacity

Tata Power is planning to double the capacity of its solar cell and module manufacturing facility at Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, according to N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons. The TP Solar Ltd unit, currently India’s largest single-location solar manufacturing plant with a capacity of 4.3 GW, was inaugurated on Thursday.

The plant was built with an investment of Rs 4,300 crore and utilizes advanced TOPCon and Mono Perc technologies. It is designed to meet India’s growing demand for renewable energy by producing high-efficiency solar cells and modules. The expansion plan aligns with Tata Power’s goal of investing Rs 1.25 trillion between FY26 and FY30 to double its operational capacity from 15.6 GW to 32 GW.

Commitment to Expansion and Job Creation

Chandrasekaran highlighted the plant’s potential for significant capacity expansion. “The plant has huge opportunities to expand from 4.3 GW to over 8 GW in the coming days,” he said. The announcement was welcomed by Tamil Nadu’s State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, who emphasized the job creation potential of the facility, particularly in South Tamil Nadu.

The facility also reinforces Tata’s growing investment footprint in the state, joining other ventures such as Tata Electronics, Tata JLR, and TCS. The plant is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities, with 80% of the workforce already comprising women.

Boosting India’s Renewable Energy Sector

During the plant’s inauguration, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin praised Tata Power’s commitment to renewable energy and community development. Praveer Sinha, CEO of Tata Power, expressed pride in the new facility, stating that it symbolizes the company’s dedication to sustainability and India’s clean energy transition.

“This facility not only showcases innovative technology but also contributes to Tamil Nadu’s economic growth by empowering local communities,” Sinha said. The solar cells and modules produced at the plant will primarily support Tata Power’s ongoing projects, further strengthening the company’s supply chain.

Future Expansion and Contribution to Energy Security

In addition to the Tirunelveli facility, Tata Power operates another manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, Karnataka, with a production capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells. The company continues to explore opportunities for expanding market distribution and aims to support India’s Net-Zero carbon future through sustainable energy solutions.

With its commitment to clean energy innovation, local job creation, and green entrepreneurship, Tata Power’s solar initiatives are positioned to play a pivotal role in India’s renewable energy landscape.
