The Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, anticipated to be the largest cultural and spiritual gathering with over 450 million participants, is embracing cutting-edge technology to ensure a safe and well-managed event. The Uttar Pradesh government has implemented a comprehensive security framework, blending traditional vigilance with modern innovations.
Heightened Surveillance and Fire Safety Measures
A robust surveillance system includes over 2,700 CCTVs and multiple checkpoints across Maha Kumbh Nagar to monitor temples and key locations. Proactive intelligence teams will be on alert for any suspicious activities. For fire safety, the Uttar Pradesh Fire and Emergency Services have deployed advanced fire-fighting systems, including four articulating water towers (AWTs). These towers, equipped with video and thermal imaging capabilities, can effectively tackle fires in tall structures and tents. An allocated budget of ₹131.48 crore has been used to purchase 351 fire-fighting vehicles and train over 2,000 personnel.
AI and Drone Surveillance
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drones, including underwater drones, will monitor the event area and provide continuous surveillance of river regions. A specialized cybersecurity team will safeguard the digital infrastructure, while a newly introduced multi-disaster response vehicle will assist in emergencies. This vehicle, equipped with victim location cameras, heavy-lifting tools, and life-saving equipment, is designed to handle complex rescue operations efficiently.
Comprehensive Water Safety Protocols
Ensuring river safety, a large contingent of 3,800 Water Police personnel, along with an additional 1,300 officers, will patrol the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. These teams will be supported by advanced technology, including underwater drones, sonar systems, and FRP speed motorboats. Special barricades along an 8 km river stretch will prevent accidents, while four water ambulances equipped with medical facilities will remain on standby.
Land, Water, and Air Security Integration
The security framework integrates land, water, and air surveillance. Over 10,000 police officers, supported by disaster response teams, will oversee security, including vehicle inspections and searches. Mock drills will test equipment and protocols to ensure readiness. More than 700 vessels, explosive ordnance disposal teams, and rechargeable mobile lighting units will enhance operational efficiency.
Pilgrim Support and Emergency Response
Lost and Found registration hubs will help reconnect missing pilgrims with their families, leveraging digital sign-ups and public notifications. Remote-controlled life buoys and Incident Response Systems (IRS) will ensure swift action in emergencies. Medical and disaster response teams will be on standby, ready to handle large-scale incidents.
