upGrad and Maharashtra Launch AI Education Initiative

upGrad has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra to establish AI Excellence Centers across the state. This partnership aims to develop a robust AI talent base, create global job opportunities, and contribute to Maharashtra’s ambitious economic goals. The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ronnie Screwvala at Davos.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Education and Development

The initiative involves a substantial investment of INR 2,150 crore to establish upGrad Institutes of AI Excellence. These institutes aim to equip over 1 million students with skills in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, aligning with the vision of making Maharashtra a hub for advanced education and innovation.

Key pillars of the initiative include:

  • Urban and Hybrid Education Programs:
The upGrad-supported ATLAS SkillTech University will introduce tailored hybrid programs in areas like AI, digital transformation, technology, and gaming. This effort aligns with the Maharashtra State University of Eminence initiative, elevating the state’s educational standards.
  • Global Collaborations and ‘Educity’ Vision:
Under Chief Minister Fadnavis’s ‘Educity’ initiative, partnerships with three renowned global universities will lead to the creation of Urban University and Campus Hubs. These hubs aim to deliver globally benchmarked education, positioning Maharashtra as a leader in higher education.
  • Empowering Rural Talent:
A significant focus of the initiative is on rural development. It aims to empower 250,000 rural youth by addressing talent gaps, training professionals, and supporting rural entrepreneurs. This will drive socio-economic upliftment and strengthen Maharashtra’s rural economy.

Transforming Maharashtra into a Global Talent Hub

The collaboration has received widespread praise from industry leaders and educators. Dr. Indu Shahani, Founding Chancellor of ATLAS SkillTech University, highlighted the mission to create visionary job creators, stating, “By empowering learners with cutting-edge skills, we aim to create transformative opportunities across urban and rural communities.”

Ronnie Screwvala, Co-founder of upGrad, emphasized the importance of extending the state’s urban learning infrastructure to rural areas. “This partnership will accelerate our commitment to producing AI-ready talent for the careers of tomorrow,” he said.

A Step Towards Maharashtra’s $5 Trillion Economy Vision

This initiative is not just about education—it’s a strategic move to amplify Maharashtra’s role in India’s journey toward becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2030. By balancing urban and rural development, the partnership positions Maharashtra as a global center for AI talent, innovation, and education.
