VTU–QNu Labs Launch Quantum Lab in Bengaluru

India’s quantum ambitions took a major step forward as Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) announced a partnership with QNu Labs, the country’s pioneering quantum cryptography startup, to establish a state-of-the-art quantum communication lab in Bengaluru. The facility will serve as a national hub for hands-on training, research, and industry collaboration in one of the most advanced frontiers of technology.

Building India’s Quantum Workforce

The lab, housed at VTU’s Research and Industry Incubation Centre, aims to train more than four lakh students across VTU’s 200 affiliated colleges. It will allow both students and faculty to work directly with quantum systems — a rare opportunity in India’s emerging quantum landscape.

“This isn’t just about setting up a lab; it’s about creating a sustainable ecosystem where students and faculty understand what this technology means for India’s future,” said Sunil Gupta, CEO of QNu Labs.

Beyond technical training, the initiative includes minor degree programs in quantum technology and plans for a dedicated master’s course. Faculty across the state will undergo specialized upskilling to teach and supervise projects related to quantum computing, communication, and encryption.

Strategic Significance and National Alignment

The collaboration aligns closely with the objectives of India’s National Quantum Mission (NQM) and Karnataka’s broader strategy to position itself as a quantum innovation hub. As India invests heavily in frontier science to achieve its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, initiatives like this are crucial to nurturing domestic capability in defense, digital security, and scientific research.

Commander Devendra Singh, Director of Research and Development at VTU, noted that the lab would also support strategic military and cybersecurity capabilities. “Our partnership is about creating indigenous intellectual capital in quantum cryptography and secure communication — critical areas for national security,” he said.

Industry Collaboration and Quantum Startups

For QNu Labs, the partnership extends its growing leadership in India’s quantum sector. The company, which recently raised ₹60 crore in Series A funding, launched two major cybersecurity platforms — QConnect and QVerse — along with its global learning arm, QNu Academy. The new VTU lab will act as a feeder system for such quantum startups by enabling industry-ready engineers.

Ajith Padyana, Director of the VTU-VRIF Centre for Deep Technologies, said, “Quantum technology is no longer futuristic — it’s happening now. Our students must be ready to lead it.”

The Road Ahead

The VTU–QNu Labs partnership is expected to catalyze similar collaborations between academia and deep-tech startups across India. With growing global attention on quantum-safe communication, India’s academic and research institutions are well-positioned to contribute to international efforts in secure digital infrastructure.

By combining research, education, and entrepreneurship, the initiative not only strengthens Karnataka’s reputation as a technology hub but also reinforces India’s strategic position in the global race for quantum supremacy.
