Walmart Enables ChatGPT Shopping via AI Deal

Walmart has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout feature, enabling customers and Sam’s Club members to shop directly through the AI chatbot. The move signals a major step in Walmart’s digital transformation strategy and positions the retailer as an early adopter of conversational commerce powered by artificial intelligence.

Shares of Walmart rose 5% following the announcement, reflecting investor optimism over the company’s expanding use of AI technologies to enhance customer engagement and operational efficiency.

According to Walmart, users will now be able to discover, review, and purchase products seamlessly within ChatGPT, making shopping more intuitive and interactive than ever before.

AI-Powered Shopping for the Next-Gen Consumer

The partnership builds on Walmart’s growing AI ecosystem, which includes “Sparky,” the company’s in-app generative AI assistant that provides product suggestions, summarizes customer reviews, and helps users find personalized recommendations.

By combining ChatGPT’s conversational intelligence with Walmart’s retail infrastructure, the retailer aims to shorten the customer journey—from product search to checkout—into a single, voice- or text-based interaction.

This collaboration also allows Walmart to compete more closely with Amazon, whose Rufus AI assistant has already gained traction as an in-platform shopping guide. Early data from SimilarWeb indicates that ChatGPT referrals accounted for nearly 15% of Walmart’s web traffic in September 2025, a significant rise from 9.5% in August.

Transforming Retail with Conversational Commerce

Industry experts view the Walmart–OpenAI partnership as a defining moment for AI in retail, with the potential to reshape e-commerce customer experiences. The integration allows ChatGPT users to complete transactions directly from product suggestions—turning casual browsing into instant purchases.

The company’s growing investment in AI aligns with a broader retail trend toward personalization, speed, and automation. As more consumers engage with AI assistants for everyday decisions, conversational commerce could soon become the new standard for online shopping.
