One in Three: Bengaluru Leads India’s Market for the Engineers Who Deploy AI

Bengaluru accounts for 34% of India’s Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) talent. That makes it the country’s largest hub, according to a report by FDE Academy. Hyderabad follows with 14%, and Delhi NCR has 13%.

Together, those three cities hold 61% of India’s FDE talent. Pune has 12% and Mumbai 11%. Chennai and other cities each have 8%.

The concentration shows how much established technology centres matter. Demand is growing for professionals who can move AI solutions from experiment to production. FDEs combine engineering skill, customer engagement and enterprise problem-solving.

Where FDEs Work

Big Tech employs 38% of FDE professionals. Product companies and IT services and consulting firms each account for 24%. AI-first startups make up the remaining 14% of the talent pool.

The pool is young. Around 70% of FDE professionals have eight years of experience or less. That points to a need for deeper pools of experienced talent as enterprise AI adoption grows.

What Employers Look For

Customer and consulting skills appear in 98% of the FDE job postings the report analysed. Core engineering skills appear in 94%. Cloud and AI operations skills appear in 84%.

Employers are also moving past conventional coding tests. They now use deployment case studies, system design interviews, client simulations and portfolio reviews to assess candidates.

Pay and Career Priorities

The report gives indicative median annual salaries for field-deployed AI builders. They run from ₹32 lakh for professionals with zero to three years of experience to ₹1.55 crore for those with more than 15 years.

It also found that transformation, governance and risk roles are the top hiring priority for 28% of employer respondents. Only 18% of professionals said they prefer that career path.

Raghav Gupta, Founder and CEO of FDE Academy, said AI deployment needs engineering depth, business understanding and the ability to own outcomes in a customer’s environment. As organisations move beyond pilots, access to that mix of skills will matter more, he said.
