India Sets Record with 24 GW Solar Capacity in 2024

India achieved a historic milestone in renewable energy in 2024, installing a record-breaking 24.5 gigawatts (GW) of power capacity. This marks the highest annual solar installation ever recorded, according to JMK Research, with solar energy now accounting for over 47% of the nation’s total renewable capacity.

Renewable Energy Breakthrough

India’s total renewable energy capacity surpassed 210 GW in December 2024, with solar energy leading the mix at 96 GW. This rapid growth in solar installations represents a twofold increase over 2023. Wind energy contributed 3.4 GW in 2024, bringing the total to 48 GW, while large hydropower stands at 46.9 GW, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Together, these renewable sources underline India’s ongoing push towards achieving its ambitious clean energy targets.

In 2024, these installations included 18 GW of utility-scale projects, 4.59 GW of rooftop solar, and 1.48 GW of off-grid capacity. Rajasthan led the way with 7.09 GW, followed by Gujarat with 4.32 GW, and Tamil Nadu with 1.73 GW, collectively contributing 71% of India’s utility-scale solar installations. These states have seen significant investments in infrastructure and favorable policies, enabling rapid deployment of large-scale solar projects.

Moreover, rooftop and off-grid solar are gaining momentum, driven by government incentives and a growing demand for energy independence in rural and semi-urban areas. These segments not only diversify India’s renewable portfolio but also help address energy access challenges, making renewable energy more inclusive. With solar power now accounting for more than 47% of India’s renewable capacity, the country is firmly on track to solidify its position as a global leader in clean energy transition.

Wind Energy Growth

The wind energy sector also showed strong momentum, with Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu emerging as the leading states. The 3.4 GW added in 2024 represents a 21% increase over the previous year.
